We are all wired differently, and that is why specific counselling techniques are used to meet each person's particular needs. For example, some people may have a natural talent with numbers, music or art, or words. These natural talents are also called intelligences.
In 1983, Professor Howard Gardner, Harvard University neuropsychologist and educator, introduced the theory of multiple intelligences (MI). Gardner's research showed that certain areas of the brain were linked to certain types of knowledge, all distinct and relatively independent. He identified eight different intelligences as follows and validated them:
Expressive therapies (ET) are the tools for multiple intelligences in counselling. ET use creative arts as therapy. Creative arts therapies include visual arts therapy, music therapy, movement and dance therapy, expressive writing, poetry therapy, or drama therapy. over more than three decades.
Expressive therapies (ET) are the tools for multiple intelligences in counselling. ET uses creative arts as therapy. Creative arts therapies include visual arts as therapy, music as therapy, movement and dance as therapy, expressive writing, poetry as therapy, or drama as therapy.
This integrated MI-ET approach is unique and holistic, and also includes suitable evidence-based theories. Researchers have shown that when a person uses their preferred multiple intelligence (MI) and expressive therapies (ET), their thoughts and feelings can be identified more clearly and faster than in traditional "talk therapies." The MI-ET approach is suitable for all age groups with various challenges in improving mental well-being.
